Zero Mercury, Zero Compromise. The PURELAB® Chorus 1 Xe and the New Era of Ultrapure Water.

The lab equipment industry is undergoing a massive shift toward sustainability, but when it comes to ultra-pure water, scientists cannot afford to sacrifice a single part-per-million of accuracy. Laboratories depend on high-quality water for incredibly sensitive trace analysis. Historically, achieving this extreme level of purity meant relying on mercury-vapor UV lamps to break down organic contaminants.

ELGA LabWater (a subsidiary of Veolia) has engineered a major technological breakthrough: the PURELAB® Chorus 1 Xe. By introducing advanced Xenon Excimer Lamp Technology, they have successfully eliminated mercury from the water purification equation without compromising performance.

The Problem with Traditional Mercury Lamps

For more than a century, mercury vapor lamps have been the gold standard for laboratory water treatment. They produce two specific peaks of UV light: 254nm for sterilizing microorganisms and 185nm for decomposing dissolved organic molecules. Despite their effectiveness, mercury lamps carry severe environmental downsides: Mercury is a highly dangerous, bioaccumulative toxin that builds up in living organisms and ecosystems.

International frameworks, such as the UN Minamata Convention, are actively working to ban the import and export of mercury-containing goods. Traditional lamps require highly specialized, hazardous waste disposal protocols when they burn out. While alternative technologies like filtration easily replace the biological control of 254nm light, finding a mercury-free substitute capable of replicating the organic destruction of 185nm light has been a massive engineering challenge.

How Xenon Excimer Technology® Changes the Game

ELGA’s solution relies on Dielectric-Barrier-Discharge (DBD). By delivering high-voltage pulses into a low-pressure xenon gas medium, the system generates highly unstable excimer molecules (Xe_2). As these molecules dissociate, they emit highly efficient, high-energy UV light with a sharp peak at 172nm.

This 172nm wavelength is a powerhouse for water purification. Its photons are roughly 7.5% more energetic than those produced by a 185nm mercury lamp. With a photon energy of 7.2 eV, this light is powerful enough to break apart incredibly resilient chemical bonds—including the stubborn carbon-fluorine (C-F) bonds found in toxic, topical PFAS contaminants. Furthermore, it dissociates dissolved oxygen and water molecules to generate ozone and hydroxyl radicals, which rapidly oxidize organic impurities.

Overcoming the 172nm Engineering Challenge

While 172nm light is exceptionally powerful, it is also absorbed by water incredibly fast. In fact, its effective penetration depth in pure water is a mere 0.036 mm. To make this technology viable for active water treatment, ELGA redesigned the reactor from the ground up:

  • Maximized Surface Area: The system uses a wide-diameter lamp design to more than double the water-light interface to over 310 cm^2.
  • Turbulent, Shallow Paths: The water path is engineered to be exceptionally shallow, promoting a turbulent flow that forces all passing water into the ultra-thin treatment zone.
  • The Nitrogen Blanket: Because oxygen in the air rapidly absorbs 172nm light and generates toxic ozone gas, ELGA placed an inert, nitrogen-filled “blanket” between the UV source and the quartz window. This prevents light loss, maximizes efficiency, and eliminates the risk of toxic ozone leaks in the lab.

Up to 5 Years of Service Life

Off-the-shelf xenon lamps used in other industrial applications (like electronics cleaning) typically suffer from short lifespans because intense bursts of energy degrade their internal quartz components.

ELGA overcame this limitation by collaborating with specialized UV manufacturing experts to optimize the lamp’s design, successfully limiting oxidative damage. The result is a system boasting an extended service life of up to 5 years (exceeding 10,000 hours of active on-time).

Unlike mercury lamps, the xenon system has unlimited on/off cycling capabilities, meaning it only consumes energy when water is actively being treated. When the module finally needs to be replaced, disposal or recycling is entirely safe and simple because it is 100% free from hazardous materials.

Zero Performance Compromise

To prove that environmental sustainability doesn’t mean sacrificing purity, ELGA put their new technology through a rigorous organic challenge test using Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK).

The results were clear: the ELGA Xenon Excimer lamp actually outperformed traditional mercury lamps in reducing Total Organic Carbon (TOC), while basic, off-the-shelf competitor xenon lamps lagged far behind.

The PURELAB® Chorus 1 Xe consistently delivers Type 1+/1 ultrapure water at 18.2 MΩ-cm. This organic and ionic purity is safeguarded by ELGA’s advanced PureSure® deionization system. PureSure® uses a unique double-purification pack arrangement that prevents weakly ionized impurities (like silicon, boron, or organics) from leaching into your pure water as the resins approach exhaustion, ensuring an uninterrupted and validatable workflow.

Versatile Applications in Modern Laboratories

Whether your work involves delicate cellular biology or high-precision chemical detection, this mercury-free innovation ensures total confidence across various workflows:

  • Analytical Research: Provides the sub-parts-per-trillion (ppt) ionic purity required for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography, and Ion Chromatography.
  • Life Science Applications: Delivers pyrogen-free, nuclease-free water ideal for PCR, cell culture, DNA sequencing, and ultrafiltration tasks by safely filtering out endotoxins, proteins, and particulates.

By swapping out century-old mercury tech for specialized Xenon Excimer lamps, laboratories can dramatically shrink their hazardous waste footprint, slash long-term consumable costs, and maintain the absolute peak of water purity.
