From Milling to Measurement: Industry Professionals Explore the Latest Sample Preparation Technologies

Labotec hosted a highly interactive in-person workshop in May titled “Latest Sample Preparation Technology for Milling and Particle Size Analysis” at its Midrand headquarters and Richards Bay branch in KwaZulu-Natal. The events were held in conjunction with special guests from Fritsch Germany, Leos Benes, and David Oduor from Fritsch East Africa.

“The two workshops in Midrand and Richards Bay were a great success in our opinion,” said David Oduor. “We had engaging discussions and practical sessions covering a variety of application topics, and I believe the delegates benefited from Leos Benes’ presentation, where we focused on current and future sample applications, as well as emerging trends. For instance, the team from PPC was looking for a solution to support its Alternative Fuel programme, which uses old tyres in place of coal, and our P-19 was recommended.”

Among the Fritsch product highlights was the new P-14, which stood out for its ability to function as both a rotor and cutting mill, while the cyclone system makes sample handling exceptionally easy. It is an ideal rotor mill for pilot plant-scale comminution in industries including plastics, analytical laboratories, biology, chemistry, food, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, forestry, and textiles.

The L-27/24 Sample Divider also demonstrated its ability to improve sample homogeneity and accuracy. Operating at up to 3,000 dividing steps per minute, it can divide sample volumes from 5 ml to 4,000 ml into as many as 30 units, all with identical chemical and physical properties.

Delegates also experienced the Fritsch ANALYSETTE 22 NeXT Micro and Nano particle sizers, offering measuring ranges of 0.5–1500 μm and 0.01–3800 μm respectively. These state-of-the-art instruments combine a compact design with powerful performance, featuring a maintenance-free dispersion unit and a highly flexible programmable measuring process that uses a single laser for faster analysis. In most cases, measurements are completed in less than a minute, with automatic evaluation and residue-free cleaning, enabling simple, reliable particle size analysis.
